    On March 19th Ambassador Jacek Izydorczyk, together with Deputy Director of Polish Cultural Institute in Tokyo, attended opening ceremony of Chiune Sugihara Sempo Museum, dedicated to the memory of Japanese Consul in Kowno (Lithuania) during II World War.

    On March 19th Ambassador Jacek Izydorczyk, together with Deputy Director of Polish Cultural Institute in Tokyo, attended opening ceremony of Chiune Sugihara Sempo Museum, dedicated to the memory of Japanese Consul in Kowno (Lithuania) during II World War. Thanks to visas issued by Sugihara thousands of Lithuanian and Polish citizens managed to escape from policy of Jewish extermination led by Nazi Germany. In 1984 Sugihara Chiune was awarded the title "Righteous among the Nations".

     

    In his speech, Ambassador Izydorczyk mentioned the role of Tadeusz Romer, Polish Ambassador in Tokyo at that time, who helped those who came to Japan thanks to visas issued by Sugihara. Ambassador Izydorczyk shared also a story about Bernese Group: when Nazi Germany decided to exterminate Jewish population in war-torn Europe, number of Polish diplomats in Switzerland carried out secret operation of providing falsified South American passports to persecuted minority. Thanks to that action, about ten thousand people were saved from being sent to German extermination camps.

     

    The ceremony of Chiune Sugihara Sempo Museum opening was also attended by Ambassadors of Israel, Netherlands, Lithuania and Deputy Ambassadors of Canada and USA. Ambassador of Israel, Yaffa Ben-Ari, mentioned in her speech, that Poles are the most numerous nation among those awarded by the title "Righteous among the Nations". After the ceremony she also thanked Polish Ambassador for participation in the event. The honourable guest was George Bluman, a Canadian mathematician whose parents – Polish citizens – were saved thanks to visas issued by Chiune Sugihara. Mr. Bluman emphasized during his conversation with Ambassador Izydorczyk that quick obtaining Canadian visas and their departure to Canada was personal input of Tadeusz Romer.
